What HOTLIPS has done…

by Tim on January 1, 2010

Sorry for the long delay!

HOTLIPS has done a lot with the money you spent there almost 6 months ago (and they did so quite a while ago). These are just a few of the bigger changes they’ve made:

  1. Replacing the bay door in their commissary (which is behind their Hawthorne location, where the event was held). The old bay door was very inefficient at holding in heat and allowed a draft.
  2. Installing a variable speed control on the heating system, so the fans circulating air won’t run any faster than they’re needed.
  3. Adding a coil to the main oven that uses the oven’s heat to heat their water.

It’s quite impressive how much they were able to do with our money (considering a lot of the big things they’d already done, being a company that cares about the environment).

For now, we’re on hiatus, since a lot of the people involved in Carrotmob Portland went off to college in different parts of the country. If you’d like to take up the mantle and carry on the Carrotmob Portland tradition, please email me! I’ll give you what tips I can and connect you with a few people still in P-town who might want to help out. carrotmobpdx at gmail dot com

EDIT: To motivate you to start another Carrotmob, I uploaded a bunch of pictures from the event. You can find them all on my Carrotmob Flickr set.

Here are a few of the better pictures:

Carrotmob at HOTLIPS succeeds admirably!

by Tim on June 22, 2009

P6240149

If you missed out on Carrotmob at HOTLIPS Pizza yesterday, here’s a brief overview:

WE MADE $6316, AND ALL OF IT IS GOING TO MAKE THE STORE MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT!

Consider that on an average Sunday, they make about $2000-2500. Sundays are normally slow, and most of the business comes in the evening. At 3 or 4 in the afternoon, the employees were saying that they had about four times the business they ordinarily have by that time.

This is what HOTLIPS will try to do with the money:
Install a new gasket for the door to the commissary
Seal the envelope between the commissary and the prep kitchen
Install an additional copper loop in the front oven at the Hawthorne location
Install a copper loop for the 33rd and Killingsworth location
Install motion sensors for lights
Install variable speed controls for exhaust and ventilation system

More coming soon…

Why HOTLIPS is the best location for Carrotmob Portland

by Tim on June 18, 2009

Believe it or not, Carrotmob Portland is really happening in only 3 days, on June 21. We are still in shock that HOTLIPS on Hawthorne has pledged 100% of their revenue to make their store more energy efficient!

In case you need a reason beyond pizza, energy efficiency, and entertainment to come to HOTLIPS on the 21st, HOTLIPS already does a lot of sustainable and socially-responsible things. They’ve been recycling and composting almost everything for a long time. They buy almost all of their ingredients locally. It seems like just about every other charitable event or cause is sponsored by them.

Also, HOTLIPS Soda will be sold for only $30 a case! That’s $10 less than usual. It’s definitely worth it to get a whole case of local, real fruit soda while helping the environment for a discount.

Check out our coverage in the Oregonian’s PDX Green blog, too, by the way.

Band lineup!

by Tim on June 16, 2009

We’ve decided on a band line-up. Each will play for about an hour, starting at 1 PM.

  1. The Glyptodons
  2. The Central Catholic Jazz Band
  3. The Angry Orts
  4. Hey Lover
  5. Ben Ballinger

The event is all ready to go. We’re very excited! Spread the word! The event is at HOTLIPS Pizza on Hawthorne from 11 AM to 7 PM.

Remember: 100% of the revenue from this event goes directly to making the store more energy efficient. (Compare that to the 22% the San Francisco Carrotmob got!) We can make a huge impact simply by buying delicious pizza.

We have a flier!

by Tim on June 3, 2009

flier-fullpageWe’ve finally finished our flier and we want you to put it up whereever you can! It works best in 11″x17″ format, but it will also work in 8.5″x11″ or 13″x19″ or whatever works for you.

Download it! Print it! Post it! Have a party with it!

We also made tiny fliers that you can print out in 8.5″x11″ and cut up into four pieces. It’s more-or-less the same as the big one… but tiny to save paper. Download it and pass it out!

The carrots come to HOTLIPS on June 21

by Tim on May 23, 2009

We’re very excited to announce that Carrotmob is tentatively planned for June 21, 2009 at HOTLIPS Pizza on SE 22nd and Hawthorne! 100% of their revenue for that day is pledged for energy-efficiency improvements. That’s phenomenal. We’re struck by their enthusiasm–as soon as we called them to ask to talk to them, they said “Come on over” and offered us 100%. Come help Carrotmob live up to its reputation and make the day a great success for them!

Based on the enthusiasm of other pizza stores, too, we want to hold another event later in the summer if this first one works out. Portland has always had a reputation of loving the environment. No city in the US has had multiple Carrotmobs yet (as far as I know). There is a lot that has to go right, but Portland could be the first one to do so.

Keep on mobbing!

Carrotmob – still going strong

by Tim on May 19, 2009

In case you were assuming we’d given up based on our previous post… Carrotmob is talking with a few pizza places around Portland who have expressed interest. We’re working hard on securing one of them in particular, but we won’t be overly-hasty like we were last time.

Keep on the lookout, though, for a Carrotmob within the next month! We’re really excited. In the meantime, join the mailing list (to the right), join the Facebook group, or follow our Twitter.

…And we lost the date.

by Tim on April 2, 2009

Due to some miscommunication between us and the coops, we are actually not having Carrotmob at these stores on April 25th. We’re disappointed we can’t work with them, but know they’ll do a lot for the environment on their own :-)

Also, Food Front on NW 23rd and Thurman is, on its own, using all its profits on April 25th, the Saturday after Earth Day, for energy efficiency improvements. Go support them!

Thanks for working with us, Alberta Coop and People’s! Sorry it didn’t work out.

We’ll be back on the hunt for good stores to Carrotmob soon!

Carrotmob has a date!

by Tim on March 29, 2009

Carrotmob Portland is currently planned to happen on April 25th, the weekend after Earth Day! Four stores have promised to give some of their revenue from that day towards environmental improvements. We’re hoping to team up with an Earth Day event to provide entertainment. If you’re a musician, we’d love to have you at any of the four stores listed below.

Be at Carrotmob April 25th! More details (such as the date and the percentage put towards environmental improvements) will come soon. For now, spread the word!
